What is Leather Glue?
If you are a crafts or a DIY person, you might need glue at some point when you need to fix things together. One of those things could be attaching leather to leather or to other surfaces, such as fabric, metal and wood among others.
When looking for glue for leather you must carefully select the best because leather is a durable and expensive material used for clothing, furniture, and footwear among others. Therefore, you do not want to use a product which will damage the leather since the cost of repair or replacement might be higher.
Not all glue types can be used to fix leather products because it’s made from rawhide and other natural fibers which are weather resistant and malleable. In such a case, you must use the most compatible glue on leather products like the ones discussed in this post.
Contact Cement vs Leather Glue
Contact cement is often confused with leather glue because when you are looking for a leather glue, you will come across contact cement suggestions.
One difference between the two is the application process. With leather glue you apply it on leather surface then stick it to the target immediately. With contact cement you apply it on both surfaces (the target spot and the material you want to attach to the target). You must wait for at least 15 minutes for the contact cement to dry on both surfaces then stick them together. Find out more here.

ATTACHING LEATHER TO OTHER MATERIALS
A) Glue Leather to Wood
You must take precautions when gluing leather to wood because some leather treatments or coloring reduce the glue’s bonding ability
Also, you must test the bond by gluing a leather scrap to a wood scrap and giving it a light tug.
In terms of the color (Yellow vs white), yellow glue won’t discolor most leathers, but check for color transfer when gluing thin or light-colored leather.
In this case contact cement is preferred over leather glue because a quality contact cement creates a strong bond to both the wood and leather if the materials are prepped properly beforehand.
B) Glue Leather to Metal
When gluing leather to metal it’s advised you go for a superglue based adhesive because they provide a stronger hold and bond. You can also use a contact cement but it’s not as strong as the superglue option.
Before you apply the glue on the metal you must prepare it by applying a small amount of muriatic acid, let it settle for a few minutes and then rinse and dry it completely and now to can proceed to applying the adhesive.
C) Glue Leather to Plastic
You must prepare both surfaces in the following way before applying the adhesive. Wipe both surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust. Allow both surfaces to air dry. Apply a small dollop of the contact adhesive to both surfaces, and rub with your fingertip to spread a thin, even layer over both the plastic and the leather. Wipe your finger off on the damp cloth.
Once done and all secured use sandpaper to remove excess where straps overlap and to smooth it out.
D) Glue Leather to Leather
Contact cement will give you a bond that is stronger than the leather itself. Rubber cement on the other hand is a much, much weaker bond, and in fact is used as a temporary bond in many applications.
E) Glue Leather to Fabric
Contact adhesive creates the strongest bond, while spray-on adhesive dries clear but creates a slightly weaker bond.
Wipe the surfaces with a dry cloth. Moisten the cloth with water and wipe over the surfaces to remove sticky buildup. Let both surfaces air-dry.
